The Great Barrier Reef Foundation funds research that protects and preserves the Great Barrier Reef, particularly in the face of climate change. The Foundation plays a critical role in strategically engaging the private sector in supporting research that protects and preserves the Reef.

AN INDEX FOR THE REEF IN LIGHT OF CLIMATE CHANGE

The development of the prototype Resilience Index for the Great Barrier Reef.

The key outcomes include:

  • A snapshot of the current scientific evidence relating to the impacts of climate change on corals, mangroves, seagrasses and water quality (synthesis of current knowledge).
  • A conceptual diagram to convey the key attributes of the Reef and the key climate pressures it faces.
  • A map of the Reef that summarises the key climate threates on a regional basis, and provides an expert-opinion based rating of how each Reef region is performing in the face of climate change - good, bad and moderate.
